A boundary–area mismatch in the 1974 notification of the Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary (Shimoga), has been used by the Karnataka Forest Department as grounds to reduce and re-notify (read: de-notify) the sanctuary from ~824 sq. km to 395 sq. km. This action is in violation of the Wildlife Act and Supreme Court directions. Mapping Malnad has undertaken coordinated research and advocacy with conservationists and citizen groups, supporting regulatory engagement and the development of a robust evidence base for legal action. Consequently, Application No. 1621 of 2025 has been filed before the Central Empowered Committee (CEC). Work related to this intervention is documented here.
