The Dakshina Pinakini, known as the Thenpennai, Ponnaiyar, Pennaiyar and South Pennar, is an interstate river originating in the Nandi Hills and flowing through Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry before reaching the Bay of Bengal. In Bengaluru, however, much of the river system is experienced as a network carrying the city’s wastewater downstream. This page brings together our maps, research and documentation on the river and its catchments, particularly those in Bengaluru, including earlier work by the Editor of Mapping Malnad through Paani.Earth and Bangalore Environment Trust (BET), to provide a more complete record of the river and its basin. Together, they attempt to make visible the river, its interconnected catchments, and the pressures they face.
